How to choose your perfect wedding cake

For someone who has their life engulfed by cake and baking, finding my dream wedding cake was a very large element of my wedding planning. Each couple has their different priorities of course, as for some the food is the focal point, or for the bride, it could be the dress but for me, it had to be the wedding cake! I have outlined below some of my key tips when finding the perfect cake which you may find helpful when it comes to searching for your own wedding cake.

Start early

Wedding bakers book up quite far in advance and depending on the demand, most only take one 1- 2 cakes per week. Keeping in mind that most weddings are over a weekend, I’d recommend starting your search early so that you can get your ideal baker.

Taste their cakes

As obvious as it seems, not all bakers offer tastings as part of their consultation. If you’re spending hundreds of pounds on a wedding cake you want to know that it is not only going to look impressive but taste good too! I had ordered some small cakes to try out from a few different bakers so that I could get to know their style and flavours

Research

I met my wedding baker at a wedding fare but you can always ask your venue who they recommend, research on bridal magazines and use social media. It’s good to research their website and social media to see the styles of cakes they produce to see if you like the style of what they do. I had a very clear idea in mind of a teapot cake so my prerogative was to find someone who could make that style but also with amazing taste. It is also really reassuring when the baker has won awards – it adds an extra seal of approval!

Size of the cake

When planning it is important to understand how many portions your cake will feed. There is simply no point in over ordering if the cake is going to be thrown in the bin. As part of my culture, we bring wedding cake to anyone who couldn’t attend the wedding day so it was important for me to have plenty. If you are dishing it out afterwards, remember that naked cakes can go stale quicker than those that are iced.

Transport

It’s all well and good finding the baker of your dreams but if they are based hours away from your venue then you need to think how well the cake could travel.  Speak to your baker about what is practically possible when it comes to a wedding cake design and be clear before the wedding of how it will get to the venue.

Personally I absolutely cannot wait to sit down and have a slice of cake and cup of tea at the wedding! Enjoy your wedding cake planning!
